La Grulla is a city located in Starr County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,211.

Geography La Grulla is located at 26°16'9" North, 98°38'49" West (26.269278, -98.647067)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,211 people, 370 households, and 297 families residing in the city. The population density is 806.2/km² (2,074.2/mi²). There are 468 housing units at an average density of 311.5/km² (801.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.72% White, 0.17% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 22.71% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 97.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 370 households out of which 40.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couples living together, 19.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.7% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.27 and the average family size is 3.70.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.9% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $16,648, and the median income for a family is $18,359. Males have a median income of $15,789 versus $15,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $6,700. 40.0% of the population and 34.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 49.2% are under the age of 18 and 43.6% are 65 or older.
