La Follette is a city located in Campbell County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,926.

Geography La Follette is located at 36°22'30" North, 84°7'39" West (36.375006, -84.127623)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,926 people, 3,422 households, and 2,135 families residing in the city. The population density is 627.1/km² (1,624.7/mi²). There are 3,779 housing units at an average density of 299.0/km² (774.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.89% White, 0.54% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,422 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.8% are married couples living together, 17.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 34.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $18,370, and the median income for a family is $24,235. Males have a median income of $25,541 versus $18,835 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,355. 33.1% of the population and 28.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 48.7% are under the age of 18 and 21.1% are 65 or older.
