Kualapuu, Hawaii

Kualapuu is a town located in Maui County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,936.

Geography Kualapuu is located at 21°9'38" North, 157°3'60" West (21.160641, -157.066553)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 79.5 km² (30.7 mi²). 78.9 km² (30.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.75% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,936 people, 564 households, and 465 families residing in the town. The population density is 24.5/km² (63.5/mi²). There are 592 housing units at an average density of 7.5/km² (19.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 7.70% White, 0.00% African American, 0.52% Native American, 16.74% Asian, 43.49% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 31.20% from two or more races. 4.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 564 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 14.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.43 and the average family size is 3.78.

In the town the population is spread out with 33.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,422, and the median income for a family is $37,895. Males have a median income of $30,833 versus $21,595 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,373. 15.1% of the population and 11.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.9% are under the age of 18 and 12.3% are 65 or older.
