Krai is a term used to refer to several of
Russia's 89 administrative regions. Other regions are referred to as "oblast" or "republic". Krais and oblasts have the same constitutional status, while republics have more autonomy. The word "krai" (which also means "border" or "end"), is usually used for regions located along the periphery.
Examples of krais include Primorsky Krai, Khabarovsk Krai, Krasnoyarsk Krai.
