Kosciusko, Mississippi

Kosciusko is a city located in Attala County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,372. It is the county seat of Attala County6.

Geography Kosciusko is located at 33°3'29" North, 89°35'18" West (33.058108, -89.588301)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.6 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.13% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 7,372 people, 2,885 households, and 1,906 families residing in the city. The population density is 377.5/km² (977.8/mi²). There are 3,174 housing units at an average density of 162.5/km² (421.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 53.66% White, 44.57% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,885 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% are married couples living together, 21.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $21,737, and the median income for a family is $29,000. Males have a median income of $27,423 versus $16,487 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,478. 24.2% of the population and 20.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 31.9% are under the age of 18 and 20.1% are 65 or older.
