Knox County is a county located in the U.S. State of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 39,618. Its county seat is Rockland6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,958 km² (1,142 mi²). 947 km² (366 mi²) of it is land and 2,011 km² (776 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 67.98% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,618 people, 16,608 households, and 10,728 families residing in the county. The population density is 42/km² (108/mi²). There are 21,612 housing units at an average density of 23/km² (59/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.28% White, 0.24% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,608 households out of which 28.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.40% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.40% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 26.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,774, and the median income for a family is $43,819. Males have a median income of $30,704 versus $22,382 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,981. 10.10% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.90% are under the age of 18 and 8.00% are 65 or older.
