Kitchener, Ontario

The city of Kitchener, Ontario has a population of 190,399 (2001). It is located in Waterloo Regional Municipality and is adjacent to the smaller city of Waterloo. Kitchener and Waterloo are often jointly referred to as KW (Kitchener-Waterloo) though they have separate municipal governments.

Kitchener was founded as Berlin by German immigrants in 1833. During World War I, the Berlin City Council renamed the city in honour of Lord Horatio Kitchener, to demonstrate the loyalty of the city's ethnic German population to the British Empire.
