Kingwood, West Virginia

Kingwood is a city located in Preston County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,944. It is the county seat of Preston County6.

Geography Kingwood is located at 39°28'17" North, 79°41'5" West (39.471280, -79.684839)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 2,944 people, 1,283 households, and 844 families residing in the city. The population density is 460.2/km² (1,192.9/mi²). There are 1,417 housing units at an average density of 221.5/km² (574.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.69% White, 1.02% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,283 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,155, and the median income for a family is $36,313. Males have a median income of $30,658 versus $18,190 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,299. 17.0% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.2% are under the age of 18 and 13.6% are 65 or older.
