Kingsway Tunnel

The Kingsway Tunnel is a tunnel under the River Mersey in Merseyside in the north west of England, between Liverpool and Wallasey.

It was built between 1966 and 1971 when the Queensway Tunnel between Liverpool and Birkenhead was no longer sufficient to cope with the traffic.

It was opened in June 1971 by Queen Elizabeth II, and it consists of a twin tube, each tube having two lanes, each 12 ft. wide.

In a study following the fire in the Mont Blanc Tunnel, inspectors from the European Union rated the Kingsway Tunnel as "good", one of only eight in Europe.

There is also a railway tunnel under the Mersey, built between 1880 and 1886.
