Geography The county has a total area of 845 km2 (326 mi2). 819 km2 (316 mi2) of it is land and 26 km2 (10 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 3.08% water.
Demographics As of 2000, there are 6,630 people, 2,673 households, and 1,897 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km2 (21/mi2). There are 3,010 housing units at an average density of 4 persons/km2 (10 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 61.22% White, 35.67% African American, 1.42% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,673 households out of which 26.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.60% are married couples living together, 13.50% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 29.00% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the county, the population is spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,941, and the median income for a family is $40,563. Males have a median income of $33,217 versus $21,753 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,236. 10.90% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.10% are under the age of 18 and 14.80% are 65 or older.
