Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Alaska

Ketchikan Gateway Borough is a borough located in the U.S. State of Alaska. As of 2000, the population is 14,070. The borough seat is Ketchikan.

Geography The borough has a total area of 4,543 km² (1,754 mi²). 3,194 km² (1,233 mi²) of it is land and 1,349 km² (521 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.69% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 14,070 people, 5,399 households, and 3,633 families residing in the borough. The population density is 4/km² (11/mi²). There are 6,218 housing units at an average density of 2 persons/km² (5 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 74.34% White, 0.50% African American, 14.99% Native American, 4.29% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 5.29% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,399 households out of which 36.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.50% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 32.70% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the borough the population is spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 31.40% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 7.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 104.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.30 males.
