Kennett, Missouri

Kennett is a city located in Dunklin County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,260. It is the county seat of Dunklin County6.

Geography Kennett is located at 36°14'17" North, 90°3'6" West (36.237974, -90.051727)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.2 km² (6.7 mi²). 17.2 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,260 people, 4,540 households, and 3,069 families residing in the city. The population density is 652.8/km² (1,691.4/mi²). There are 4,875 housing units at an average density of 282.6/km² (732.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.44% White, 13.27% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,540 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 15.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,088, and the median income for a family is $34,167. Males have a median income of $29,958 versus $18,770 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,397. 26.1% of the population and 20.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 37.5% are under the age of 18 and 24.0% are 65 or older.
