Kekaha, Hawaii

Kekaha is a town located in Kauai County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,175.

Geography Kekaha is located at 21°58'18" North, 159°42'59" West (21.971690, -159.716290)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.03% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,175 people, 1,073 households, and 799 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,225.9/km² (3,178.2/mi²). There are 1,162 housing units at an average density of 448.7/km² (1,163.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 15.94% White, 0.19% African American, 0.50% Native American, 43.59% Asian, 12.38% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 26.43% from two or more races. 8.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,073 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $41,103, and the median income for a family is $48,629. Males have a median income of $32,969 versus $26,739 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,117. 11.2% of the population and 10.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.8% are under the age of 18 and 11.1% are 65 or older.

Items of Interest Kekaha is near WWVH, the U.S.'s pacific-region short-wave station for broadcasting time signals from an atomic clock. The clock is widely used for navigation in the Pacific Ocean.
