Kay County, Oklahoma

Kay County is a county located in the U.S. State of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population is 48,080. Its county seat is Newkirk6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,448 km² (945 mi²). 2,379 km² (919 mi²) of it is land and 68 km² (26 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.80% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 48,080 people, 19,157 households, and 13,141 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (52/mi²). There are 21,804 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.16% White, 1.79% African American, 7.53% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.98% from other races, and 4.00% from two or more races. 4.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,157 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.40% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,762, and the median income for a family is $38,144. Males have a median income of $30,431 versus $19,617 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,643. 16.00% of the population and 12.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.70% are under the age of 18 and 9.50% are 65 or older.
