Kaunakakai, Hawaii

Kaunakakai is a town located in Maui County, Hawaii. It is the largest town on the island of Molokai. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,726.

Geography Kaunakakai is located at 21°5'20" North, 157°0'45" West (21.088968, -157.012542)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 34.94% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,726 people, 867 households, and 645 families residing in the town. The population density is 518.5/km² (1,342.7/mi²). There are 962 housing units at an average density of 183.0/km² (473.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 8.62% White, 0.04% African American, 0.15% Native American, 28.76% Asian, 30.67% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 31.58% from two or more races. 5.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 867 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 17.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.13 and the average family size is 3.66.

In the town the population is spread out with 32.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,492, and the median income for a family is $39,348. Males have a median income of $30,543 versus $22,337 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,201. 20.6% of the population and 15.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.4% are under the age of 18 and 11.8% are 65 or older.
