Kaufman County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 71,313. Its county seat is Kaufman6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,090 km² (807 mi²). 2,036 km² (786 mi²) of it is land and 54 km² (21 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.57% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 71,313 people, 24,367 households, and 19,225 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (91/mi²). There are 26,133 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.10% White, 10.53% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 5.66% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 11.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 24,367 households out of which 39.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.10% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.10% are non-families. 17.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the county, the population is spread out with 29.20% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,783, and the median income for a family is $50,354. Males have a median income of $35,537 versus $26,494 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,827. 10.50% of the population and 7.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.30% are under the age of 18 and 11.80% are 65 or older.
