Karnes County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 15,446. Its county seat is Karnes City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,952 km² (754 mi²). 1,943 km² (750 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 15,446 people, 4,454 households, and 3,246 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (21/mi²). There are 5,479 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.55% White, 10.79% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 17.23% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. 47.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,454 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% are married couples living together, 13.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 11.50% from 18 to 24, 34.20% from 25 to 44, 18.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 146.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 162.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,526, and the median income for a family is $30,565. Males have a median income of $27,260 versus $19,367 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,603. 21.90% of the population and 18.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.10% are under the age of 18 and 20.50% are 65 or older.
