Kane

Kane, played by Glen Jacobs[?], is also a character on WWE RAW[?]. On the show, Kane wears a red and black costume, as well as a mask to hide his scarred visage. Kane’s brother, The Undertaker[?] is responsible for this deformity. The Undertaker supposedly burned his younger brother as a child, and this traumatic injury was the impetus for Kane’s introduction to the WWF on October 5, 1997. Though Kane’s character has changed several times, it has always carried the themes of fire and vengeance (as dictated by his pre-television history”).

Kane's story is bizarre and self-contradictory -- Largely due to the WWF creative staff's inability to maintain any sense of storyline continuity. The Undertaker's parents ran a funeral home where they employed a young Paul Bearer[?], who would later go on to be the Undertaker's long time manager, but who at the time had an affair with the Undertaker's mother leading to her pregnancy with Kane, making Kane and the Undertaker only half brothers. Although Kane apparently had a facination with fire, it was the Undertaker who decided to set the family home ablaze, killing both his parents (whom he buried on a New Jersey sound stage for no apparent reason). Although Kane was believed to have also perished in the fire, he was in fact rescued from the blaze by Paul Bearer who raised him as his own son (which was convenient since Kane was his son) although apparently never revealing this information to Kane until adulthood.

At some point Kane may or may not have spent time in a mental institution. It is also possible he was kept locked in a basement and raised in a Boo Radley[?] sort of way. He was certainly socially maladjusted and the burns he'd received in the fire required that he wear a mask and use a special device to talk.

In 1992 he began a wrestling career as well as a relationship with a young lady by the name of Katie Vick[?]. Whether she was his girlfriend, just a "friend" or only a fan is a subject of debate. They attended a party together, driving there in her car, where she proceeded to get exceedingly drunk. Kane was also drinking although to what level is unclear. He was driving her home and the combination of his unfamiliarity with a standard transmission, the weather, the darkness (I guess it was a dark and stormy night) and an animal on the road cause Kane to lose control of the vehicle and crash. He suffered a broken arm and Katie was killed in the accident.

The police deemed it to be just and accident but just to be on the safe side they had the medical examiner check for the presence of semen and lo and behold Kane's semen was present in her body. This means either she was his girlfriend, "friends" meant more than just friends, he had forced himself on her or that he'd taken advantage of her body post-mortem (Now there's a girl you can take advantage of!). Opinions are mixed on this subject.

In 1997 Paul Bearer, who had dumped the Undertaker as his protege, insisted on becoming his manager again after Undertaker had managed to claim the WWF championship from Sid Eudy[?]. Paul claimed that he'd only dumped Undertaker to get him fired up enough to progress to the next level of competition. Undertaker was not interested so Paul tried to blackmail him with the knowledge of what had happened to Undertaker's family and was successful for a time until he'd rather risk Paul's accusations becoming public. In response Undertaker lied and claimed that Kane had set the fire accidentally. Paul insisted that this was a falsehood and eventually claimed that not only was Kane still alive, but was coming to the WWF for revenge.

At the end of the inaugural Hell in the Cell[?] cage match against Shawn Michaels[?], who had cost Undertaker his championship to Bret Hart[?] while acting as the referee of their Summer Slam[?] bout, Kane emerged from the back, tore the cage door off its hinges and confronted his brother. Distracting Undertaker by setting the turnbuckles ablaze, Kane delivered a tombstone piledriver to his brother, costing him the match.

Kane and Undertaker have had a love/hate relationship since that time with them teaming up only to turn on each other. At one point Kane had set a casket, containing his brother, ablaze. Kane eventually dug up the Undertaker's parents (one of whom was Kane's mother) from the sound stage in New Jersey, brought their remains to a wrestling show where he proceeded to toss Undertaker into his mother's coffin (along with her bones) and then set the Undertaker's father's remains on fire. Undertaker eventually admitted to setting the fire that consumed the family home and reunited with Paul Bearer.

Kane started tagteaming with XPac of Degeneration X and they won multiple tag titles together. At some point XPac told Kane that he no longer needed his device to speak and lo and behold Kane could now speak. His vocal chords had regrown themselves in that special way that vocal chords don't. Kane began to develop his social skills largely due to his friendship with XPac. He even began his first relationship with a woman (since Katie, apparently) with a female wrestler called Tori[?] (she never did have a last name, to my knowledge). XPac soon turned against Kane when DX reformed under HHH[?] and later stole Tori away from Kane. This of course sparked a feud between Kane and XPac that was never fully resolved even after XPac left the WWF (but not before, as a member of the NWO[?], stealing Kane's mask, which has since been replaced with a new one).

Kane has managed to capture numerous tag titles with Mankind (Mick Foley), XPac and his brother the Undertaker. He has also won the Intercontinental title twice (he is the last to carry said title before its unification with the World title in a match with HHH).

At one point Kane feuded with Chris Jericho[?] over what is commonly believed to have been Chris accidentally spilling coffee on Kane. This is an oversimplification. The Kane took it as an affront when Jericho said, "I hope I didn't burn you." Kane is very sensitive about the subject of being burnt, and that was what angered him. I'm sure he wasn't all that happy about the hot coffee spilled on him, but accidents do happen.
