Kalamazoo Township, Michigan

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 30.6 km² (11.8 mi²). 30.3 km² (11.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.10% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,675 people, 9,349 households, and 5,338 families residing in the township. The population density is 716.5/km² (1,856.4/mi²). There are 9,856 housing units at an average density of 325.8/km² (844.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 82.46% White, 12.31% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.61% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 3.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,349 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the township the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 14.0% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.9 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $37,463, and the median income for a family is $46,161. Males have a median income of $35,993 versus $28,064 for females.
