Jones County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 1,193. Its county seat is Murdo6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,517 km² (972 mi²). 2,514 km² (971 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,193 people, 509 households, and 327 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 614 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.81% White, 0.00% African American, 2.43% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 509 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.20% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 33.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 103.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.80 males.
