Johnson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 17,499. Its county seat is Mountain City6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 784 km² (303 mi²). 773 km² (298 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.41% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 17,499 people, 6,827 households, and 4,751 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (59/mi²). There are 7,879 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.40% White, 2.42% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,827 households out of which 26.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the county, the population is spread out with 19.70% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 27.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 114.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $23,067, and the median income for a family is $28,400. Males have a median income of $24,018 versus $18,817 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,388. 22.60% of the population and 18.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.80% are under the age of 18 and 21.50% are 65 or older.
