Johnny Mnemonic is a
cyberpunk based movie, based on a short story of the same name by
William Gibson, in which
Keanu Reeves plays a man with a cybernetic implant in his head designed to store information. He uses this implant to act as courier between contracting parties. What he begins to find, however, is that his package not only exceeds the amount of storage in the implant, causing death if not soon removed, it also contains information far more important and valuable than he had ever imagined. On its release, the movie was scorned by film critics, who mocked what they saw as mediocre acting, hardly believable characters, and lack of substance/coherence. The film is also notable for the presence of
Takeshi Kitano, whose role in the Japanese version of the film was greatly expanded. 1995, 103 minutes, Color, English/Japanese
