Jewell County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 3,791. Its county seat is Mankato, Kansas6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,368 km² (914 mi²). 2,355 km² (909 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,791 people, 1,695 households, and 1,098 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 2,103 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.79% White, 0.03% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,695 households out of which 23.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 4.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% are non-families. 32.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 4.40% from 18 to 24, 21.50% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 25.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 97.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,538, and the median income for a family is $36,953. Males have a median income of $24,821 versus $18,170 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,644. 11.60% of the population and 8.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.80% are under the age of 18 and 10.90% are 65 or older.
