Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,718 people, 1,976 households, and 1,314 families residing in the borough. The population density is 272.3/km² (704.9/mi²). There are 2,073 housing units at an average density of 119.6/km² (309.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.71% White, 0.28% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,976 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
