Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 980 km² (378 mi²). 977 km² (377 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.30% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 27,554 people, 10,134 households, and 7,600 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (73/mi²). There are 11,469 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.45% White, 0.75% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,134 households out of which 36.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.70% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.00% are non-families. 20.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
