Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi

Jefferson Davis County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 13,962. It is named in honor of Mississippi Senator and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Its county seat is Prentiss6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,060 km² (409 mi²). 1,058 km² (408 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,962 people, 5,177 households, and 3,768 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 5,891 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 41.66% White, 57.38% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,177 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.70% are married couples living together, 21.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 25.40% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $21,834, and the median income for a family is $27,594. Males have a median income of $23,942 versus $16,510 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,974. 28.20% of the population and 23.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 38.70% are under the age of 18 and 24.50% are 65 or older.
