Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 45,932. Its county seat is Brookville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,701 km² (657 mi²). 1,698 km² (655 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 45,932 people, 18,375 households, and 12,862 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (70/mi²). There are 22,104 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.97% White, 0.13% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,375 households out of which 30.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.60 males.
