Jefferson County, Colorado

Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 527,056. The county seat is Golden.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,015 km² (778 mi²). 2,000 km² (772 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 527,056 people, 206,067 households, and 140,537 families residing in the county. The population density is 264/km² (683/mi²). There are 212,488 housing units at an average density of 106/km² (275/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.59% White, 0.89% African American, 0.75% Native American, 2.28% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.23% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. 9.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 206,067 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 9.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $57,339, and the median income for a family is $67,310. Males have a median income of $45,306 versus $32,372 for females. The per capita income for the county is $28,066. 5.20% of the population and 3.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.80% are under the age of 18 and 5.10% are 65 or older.
