Jacksonville is a city located in Onslow County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 66,715. It is the county seat of Onslow County6.

Geography Jacksonville is located at 34°45'35" North, 77°24'35" West (34.759630, -77.409765)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 117.0 km² (45.2 mi²). 115.2 km² (44.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.51% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 66,715 people, 17,175 households, and 13,533 families residing in the city. The population density is 579.1/km² (1,500.0/mi²). There are 18,312 housing units at an average density of 159.0/km² (411.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.94% White, 23.96% African American, 0.75% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 5.42% from other races, and 3.67% from two or more races. 10.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,175 households out of which 49.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.8% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% are non-families. 16.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 36.3% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 8.8% from 45 to 64, and 4.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 156.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 178.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,544, and the median income for a family is $33,763. Males have a median income of $17,121 versus $19,931 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,237. 14.1% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.0% are under the age of 18 and 17.7% are 65 or older.
