Jackson County, West Virginia

Jackson County is a county located in the State of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 28,000. Its county seat is Ripley6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,221 km² (472 mi²). 1,206 km² (466 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.23% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 28,000 people, 11,061 households, and 8,207 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (60/mi²). There are 12,245 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.75% White, 0.08% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,061 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.60% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.80% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,434, and the median income for a family is $38,021. Males have a median income of $32,991 versus $20,253 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,205. 15.20% of the population and 12.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.60% are under the age of 18 and 9.00% are 65 or older.
