Jackson County, Mississippi

Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 131,420. Its county seat is Pascagoula6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,702 km² (1,043 mi²). 1,883 km² (727 mi²) of it is land and 819 km² (316 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 30.33% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 131,420 people, 47,676 households, and 35,709 families residing in the county. The population density is 70/km² (181/mi²). There are 51,678 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (71/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.35% White, 20.87% African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.57% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 47,676 households out of which 37.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 14.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 20.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 10.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,118, and the median income for a family is $45,091. Males have a median income of $32,996 versus $22,770 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,768. 12.70% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.80% are under the age of 18 and 12.10% are 65 or older.
