Itawamba County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 22,770. Its county seat is Fulton6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,400 km² (540 mi²). 1,379 km² (532 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.50% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 22,770 people, 8,773 households, and 6,500 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 9,804 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.47% White, 6.47% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,773 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 10.60% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,156, and the median income for a family is $36,793. Males have a median income of $29,231 versus $20,900 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,956. 14.00% of the population and 10.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.70% are under the age of 18 and 23.60% are 65 or older.
