Isle of Palms is a city located in Charleston County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,583.

Geography Isle of Palms is located at 32°47'47" North, 79°45'54" West (32.796327, -79.765084)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.4 km² (5.6 mi²). 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.64% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,583 people, 1,942 households, and 1,382 families residing in the city. The population density is 395.9/km² (1,025.9/mi²). There are 3,881 housing units at an average density of 335.2/km² (868.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.23% White, 0.35% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,942 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 20.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.72.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 34.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $76,170, and the median income for a family is $88,874. Males have a median income of $60,640 versus $37,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $44,221. 3.4% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.3% are under the age of 18 and 1.0% are 65 or older.
