ISAM - Indexed Sequential Access Method - A generic name to a set of algorithms to enhance the access speed on computer files. Basically these methods rely on duplicating the relevant data keys, creating indexes, that point to whole file records.

ISAM algorithms are used in nearly all database systems and natively in several programming languages, like COBOL.
