Irondale is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 9,813.

Geography Irondale is located at 33°31'55" North, 86°41'13" West (33.531939, -86.686816)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.3 km² (9.0 mi²). 23.2 km² (9.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.11% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,813 people, 4,019 households, and 2,736 families residing in the city. The population density is 422.4/km² (1,094.0/mi²). There are 4,212 housing units at an average density of 181.3/km² (469.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.69% White, 25.28% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,019 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $46,203, and the median income for a family is $55,365. Males have a median income of $38,138 versus $30,775 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,251. 9.2% of the population and 5.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.0% are under the age of 18 and 9.1% are 65 or older.
