There's no such thing as a "coprighted character". The only issue is whether or not this particular image is copyrighted. There is also the entirely different issue of trademarks, but that doesn't apply to Wikipedia.

Ummm... if there is no such thing as a 'copyrighted character' then why is fanfiction considered plagiarism, and why have Paramount etc etc spent so much time and money chasing up fan websites and squashing fan artists who use their characters, ships and universes? Because that's a issue of trademark, not copyright. Go read the articles on IP here to learn the difference. A fan site may violate trademarks by using names and images that cause someone to think that it has some real association with original (and of course many of them use copyrighted images and text as well). And of course, bug businesses also commonly complain about some things they really have no legal standing at all to object to (in particular, parodies and commentary). --LDC
