Huron County, Michigan

Huron County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 36,079. Its county seat is Bad Axe6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,533 km² (2,136 mi²). 2,167 km² (837 mi²) of it is land and 3,367 km² (1,300 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 60.85% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 36,079 people, 14,597 households, and 10,144 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 20,430 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.02% White, 0.19% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,597 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 19.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,315, and the median income for a family is $42,436. Males have a median income of $31,950 versus $21,110 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,851. 10.20% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.20% are under the age of 18 and 9.80% are 65 or older.
