Hunt County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 76,596. Its county seat is Greenville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,284 km² (882 mi²). 2,179 km² (841 mi²) of it is land and 106 km² (41 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.63% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 76,596 people, 28,742 households, and 20,521 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (91/mi²). There are 32,490 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.57% White, 9.45% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 3.93% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 8.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,742 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 11.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,752, and the median income for a family is $44,388. Males have a median income of $33,347 versus $23,085 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,554. 12.80% of the population and 8.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.80% are under the age of 18 and 11.70% are 65 or older.
