Hugo, Oklahoma

Hugo is a city located in Choctaw County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,536. It is the birthplace of Bill Moyers. It is the county seat of Choctaw County6.

Geography Hugo is located at 34°0'34" North, 95°30'53" West (34.009308, -95.514601)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.4 km² (5.6 mi²). 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.18% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,536 people, 2,309 households, and 1,415 families residing in the city. The population density is 385.8/km² (999.0/mi²). There are 2,798 housing units at an average density of 195.0/km² (504.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 59.43% White, 20.59% African American, 14.05% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 5.26% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,309 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.4% are married couples living together, 20.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% are non-families. 35.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 79.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,321, and the median income for a family is $26,523. Males have a median income of $26,473 versus $17,348 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,676. 29.4% of the population and 25.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 43.5% are under the age of 18 and 22.1% are 65 or older.
