Hoshi no koe

Hoshi no koe (the voices of a distant star; ほしのこえ) is a Japanese animation and manga.

In "Hoshi no Koe", Earth is at war with the Tarsians. A high school girl, Mikako Nagamine, is drafted into the army to fly a Mech, a giant battle robot. She soon has to leave Earth and her friend Noboru Terao behind. As the army follows the Tarsians on their retreat, the distance between Mikako and Noboru grows and thus, the short messages Mikako sends to Earth with her mobile phone take longer and longer. In the end, the messages take 8 years and arrive garbled, but Noboru is still waiting for Mikako to return.

While in every second Anime Earth is saved by teenage school girls, this Anime focuses on the relationship between the youths and not on the space battles.

What makes Hoshi no Koe so extraordinary is the fact that the Anime has been made mainly by one man: Makoto Shinkai. Only few other people were involved in the making. The music is by Tenmon. Shinkai and Tenmon also worked together in the making of the Anime Kumo no mukou yakusoku no bashou[?] ("The Place Promised In Our Early Days").
