Horry County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 196,629. Its county seat is Conway6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,250 km² (1,255 mi²). 2,936 km² (1,134 mi²) of it is land and 314 km² (121 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.66% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 196,629 people, 81,800 households, and 54,478 families residing in the county. The population density is 67/km² (173/mi²). There are 122,085 housing units at an average density of 42/km² (108/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.05% White, 15.50% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.16% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 2.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 81,800 households out of which 26.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.40% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.30% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,470, and the median income for a family is $42,676. Males have a median income of $27,663 versus $21,676 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,949. 12.00% of the population and 8.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.90% are under the age of 18 and 8.70% are 65 or older.
