Horatio Nelson Jackson

Horatio Nelson Jackson made the first succcessful automobile drive across the United States in 1903. The trip from San Francisco to New York took 63 days to cover 5,600 miles. There were numerous layovers while Jackson waited for replacement parts to arrive by train.

He made the journey, along with his pet bulldog, in a new Winton. These cars had no roofs, and a top speed of about 30 miles an hour.

The film-maker Ken Burns is making a documentary on this trip, which is expected to premiere in October 2003. In addition, a retired dentist named Peter Kelsing plans to re-create the journey in a restord 1903 Winton.
