The city lies at the southern end of Florida's turnpike[?], and US-1 continues down to the Florida keys[?]. There is a large USAF airbase at Homestead, and a small private airport which has breeding Burrowing Owls[?].

There are 11,162 housing units at an average density of 301.8/km² (781.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 61.00% White, 22.55% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 9.84% from other races, and 5.27% from two or more races. 51.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,095 households out of which 42.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are married couples living together, 22.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 20.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
