Synopsis In this episode, Homer is fired from his job at the nuclear power plant, drags a boulder to the town bridge to commit suicide, rushes into the street to save his family from a truck, and crusades to put a sign at the intersection. After the sign is added, Homer starts crusading for other signs he perceives as necessary: warning people of dips in the road and even encouraging people to be quiet. Homer then realizes that the biggest threat to safety in Springfield is the nuclear power plant where he used to work, and speaks out against it until he is called to Burns' office and offered a job as safety specialist.

This episode introduces Sherrie and Terrie and has a cameo of Jasper (behind Homer during his presentation to the City Commission) before he is introduced in the episode Bart the General.
