Hobson City is a town located in Calhoun County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 878.

Geography Hobson City is located at 33°37'6.589" North, 85°50'36.330" West (33.618497, -85.843425).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 878 people, 363 households, and 242 families residing in the town. The population density is 311.0/km² (802.8/mi²). There are 415 housing units at an average density of 147.0/km² (379.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 6.15% White, 92.71% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 363 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.2% are married couples living together, 35.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 76.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $17,589, and the median income for a family is $20,368. Males have a median income of $21,667 versus $19,583 for females. The per capita income for the town is $8,992. 30.2% of the population and 30.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 42.7% are under the age of 18 and 15.5% are 65 or older.
