Hillsdale County, Michigan

Hillsdale County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 46,527. Its county seat is Hillsdale6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,572 km² (607 mi²). 1,551 km² (599 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 46,527 people, 17,335 households, and 12,550 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (78/mi²). There are 20,189 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.56% White, 0.43% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,335 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,396, and the median income for a family is $45,895. Males have a median income of $35,349 versus $23,718 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,255. 8.20% of the population and 5.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.80% are under the age of 18 and 8.60% are 65 or older.
