Hillsborough County, New Hampshire

Hillsborough County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Hampshire. As of 2000, the population is 380,841. Its county seats are Manchester and Nashua.

Geography The county has a total area of 2,311 km2 (892 mi2). 2,270 km2 (876 mi2) of it is land and 41 km2 (16 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.78% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 380,841 people, 144,455 households, and 98,807 families residing in the county. The population density is 168/km2 (435/mi2). There are 149,961 housing units at an average density of 66 persons/km2 (171 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 93.90% White, 1.29% African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.00% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 3.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 144,455 households out of which 35.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.60% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 32.70% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $53,384, and the median income for a family is $62,363. Males have a median income of $42,017 versus $29,397 for females. The per capita income for the county is $25,198. 6.30% of the population and 4.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.60% are under the age of 18 and 8.20% are 65 or older.
