Henderson County, Kentucky

Henderson County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 44,829. Its county seat is Henderson6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,210 km² (467 mi²). 1,140 km² (440 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.80% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 44,829 people, 18,095 households, and 12,576 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (102/mi²). There are 19,466 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (44/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.16% White, 7.10% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,095 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,892, and the median income for a family is $44,703. Males have a median income of $33,838 versus $22,572 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,470. 12.30% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.20% are under the age of 18 and 10.10% are 65 or older.
