Hell-Fire Club
The Hell-Fire Club (properly "Abbey of St. Francis") was an alleged satanic group in England. Its membership is thought to have included many influential personages.
John Wilkes was a member, and caused its demise. He brought an orangutan adorned with horns and similar trappings to one of the Black Masses, releasing it during the ceremony. Many of those present genuinely thought they had witnessed the appearance of the Devil himself. The ensuing chaos and later public scandal played a crucial part in the dissolution of the group.
In the comic book X-men, Hell-Fire Club is a group of evil mutants.
