Helena Township, Michigan

Helena Township is a township located in Antrim County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 878.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 59.9 km² (23.1 mi²). 42.1 km² (16.3 mi²) of it is land and 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 29.64% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 878 people, 408 households, and 281 families residing in the township. The population density is 20.8/km² (54.0/mi²). There are 801 housing units at an average density of 19.0/km² (49.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.15% White, 0.11% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 408 households out of which 19.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.57.

In the township the population is spread out with 16.6% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 34.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $40,096, and the median income for a family is $49,732. Males have a median income of $33,542 versus $22,083 for females. The per capita income for the township is $24,948. 6.9% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.1% are under the age of 18 and 5.7% are 65 or older.
